Nigel Sharman

Nigel Sharman is a painter who exhibits extensively in London and is represented by Katherine Richards Gallery. To date his work has been featured twice at Katherine Richards Gallery and Nigel has participated in multiple versions of The Other Art Fair hosted by Saatchi Art. Other notable exhibitions in London include participation at King’s Cross, Candid Arts, Aubergine Arts, Town Mill Arts, and Aubergine Art.

The paintings focus on still lifes, scenery of harbors with boats, or female nude figures. Often containing distorted, stylized perspective and muted pastels, Nigel’s paintings communicate angular compositions and forms. Subjects become stretched out to portray an elliptical or asymmetrical triangular form, conveying a deep contemporary inclination.

What ultimately define the paintings are the mid tone shadows reflecting the shapes of the subject matter, without them the paintings would appear like printmaking prints with almost solid forms of color. Shadows and reflections in the water appear accurately naturalistic which anchors towards the elliptical distorted forms of the subjects. The compositions are carefully arranged and reflect triangular and diamond-shaped guidance of the eye across the surface. Use of negative space becomes strategically prevalent in Nigel’s paintings and convey a sense of grandeur of space but also feelings of melancholy undertones.

Black Eyed Sue (pictured above) portrays a nude figure with lush black eyes filling her entire pupils with darkness lying on what appears to be a Southwestern inspired tapestry on a blue surface, which could be a bed. She remains a mysterious figure with a confident yet neutral expression on her face and subtle colored shadows accentuating all of her sharp facial features. Sue seems comfortable in her own skin and conveys a connection to the audience with her mystical dark eyes engaging a sense of aged wisdom.

Nigel Sharman can be described as a fluid and painterly painter who conveys deep psychological impulses and reflections in regards to space, color, and the passage of time. Through carefully composed compositions and a sophisticated color palette, Nigel portrays everyday life with an eye towards pure elements of contemporary design principles of elliptic curvature and a soft gradual palette. Through intuition and dedication to his craft, Nigel Sharman presents a sense of refinement in simple pleasures rather than typical grand opulence.
