Evie Dreams

Updated: 15 hours ago

Evie Dreams is a contemporary figurative painter who describes her work as a “paradox: we are all the same, and yet, we are individuals. I portray my personal experiences in abstract, symbolic terms to encourage viewers to consider the similarities we share beneath the guises of culture, class and ideology. Knowing we are similar, the audience can then appreciate individuality with a higher degree of empathy. Hairless, nude identical figures capturing my likeness represent people as I see them: reflections of me, through my lenses of bias, playing with the nondual concept which all are one. Surreal, abstract, naturalist imagery with intentional symbols assert what remains depicted does not come from a 3-D world and invite viewers to form their own connections. My intuitive process of painting what feels right helps me channel something deeper than anything I can consciously decide to make, helping me understand myself”.

These fragmented compositions bloom to reveal a realm which dissolves characters into beings of unified appearances; revealing qualities of mysticism, symbolism, and sociological applications. Patterns of checkboards, crosses, and spheres are displayed throughout the paintings and integrate with the various characters. Evie’s figures emanate glowing effects and are represented with neon colors such as magenta, turquoise, and bright yellow.

The portfolio contains personal elements and Evie describes her approach to art as non-commercial, as she indicates never creating the art for any purposes of financial gain. These paintings convey conceptual poses and interactions, as if the characters were solely communicating with body language. The figures stride, lay down, hold hands, and grasp towards the sky as if to indicate a sense of yearning to each other and the environment. With a mixture of representational elements, such as realistic facial renderings, combined with flattened forms of background and body parts reminiscent of the post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, Evie reveals patterns and design principles in integration with a variety of elements, conveying a sophisticated composition and layout.

Insomnia (pictured above) can be described as one of Evie’s most imaginative works. The heavily stylized figure lays upon a central sphere, which could represent the sun or moon. Smears of checkerboard patterns dot the imaginative landscape as the character seems in disarray and discomfort over being unable to sleep. With a range of muted colors from pastels to earth tones, the figure appears as if sleeping upon the raw soil of the ground or perhaps being levitated upon an abstracted surface.

Evie Dreams remains a promising young artist who infuses imagination with the mysterious as well as social applications. Her invented realm containing figures reveals deep inclinations of poetic interactions with both each other, the landscapes they inhabit as well as abstracted planes of perspective. Through texture and bright colors, Evie invents characters who are not based on reality but rather represent concepts such as yearning for companionship, melancholiness, searching the unknown, and relationships with nature. With these spaces, Evie Dreams imagines a world where individuals can enhance their own inner qualities through interactions with each other as well as the environment.
