Annie Wood is a mixed media artist, writer, and actor who has exhibited across California and internationally in Venice. Recent exhibitions in California include a solo show at Mainstay Gallery in Santa Monica as well as collective shows at Downey Art Collision, Shockboxx Gallery in Hermosa Beach, Lugana Las Gallery, LA Art Association, Burbank Art Association, and TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has been published in The Three Tomatoes Newsletter, Rattle literary journal, and Method Writers Speak. As a writer, Annie’s works of poetry, screenwriting, and short stories have been published by The Huffington Post, Tiny Buddha, and El Portal Literary Journal.

With an eclectic body of work, Annie’s portfolio ranges from assemblages crafted onto mannequins, mixed media paintings, digital art, and charcoal drawings integrated with paint. Containing a free spirit and fascination with texture, she constructs compositions which enhance figurative elements through abstracted, textured design as well as offer a commentary on California life. Annie’s figurative works often convey a description on the concept of modeling through depictions of playful masks or figures covered in newspapers and paint (such as her mannequins). Other works with some non-figurative elements can come off as playful and childlike or also convey expressions on prestige and fame through stylized depictions of Hollywood amongst a flattened, heavily textured surface.

As a writer, Annie Wood creates visual art based on the narrative of her surroundings. These artworks have a distinctive California aesthetic and aura about them regarding the playful colors, imagery associated with filmmaking, acting as well as modeling with roughly applied surfaces and brushwork which enhance expression. Often containing streaks and caked-on colors, the various artworks convey a notion of freedom and unrestrained essence as opposed to stiffness and tightness.

Hollywood Bunny (pictured above) is one of Annie’s rare digital artworks. A vast majority of her body of art can be regarded as mixed media painting, however Hollywood Bunny remains distinct for the blocked-in design elements as well as photographic qualities. The woman portrayed appears mysterious as she becomes represented through monochromatic tones as well as concealed through a rabbit mask. As if she were attending some grand Hollywood party in her elaborate, stylish dress, the woman’s mask reveals, or rather conceals, a sense of ambiguity or even sensual undertones in regard to iconography similar to Playboy Magazine.

Annie Wood can be described as an artist in-tune with her inner spirit. Through the essence of California life as well as her career as a writer and actor, Annie conveys visual substance which relate to themes and concepts regarding fame, luxury, pleasure, and freedom of expression. The characters within her compositions reveal a silent narrative in which the audience can interpret through their own investigation of the surface. Through unclear, grainy, textured depictions as well as concealment and conceptual use of materials, Annie wood expresses the human figure and essences of cherished locations which reflect an autobiographical narrative on her experiences as well personal and professional life.
